Pizza Blogging: A family research project

We have started an annual tradition in our homeschooling house: the Annual Family Research Project, held each May after we have completed all our academic work for the year. The boys and I sit down and brainstorm a list of possible topics, then select one of them, and research it together. Last [...]

Post-Chinese food conversation

So we were driving home after a scrumptious dinner at PeiWei Asian Diner, one of our current favorites.  Ian, age 6, had taken a fortune cookie to go.  He asked me to read the fortune to him, and it was, “You will become a great philanthropist in your later years.”
“What’s a philanthropist?” he wanted to [...]

An unusual Easter feast

Remembering last year’s unique Easter “dinner.”
This year’s Easter celebration looked VERY different than the last several years’. This year, for a variety of reasons, I (Laura) took a leave of absence from the church choir, and so I was not at church yesterday from 7 a.m. to noon, involved in all the musical hoopla. Where [...]

Hey, check this out!

I mentioned awhile back that my second son Nate spends a lot of time on the Instructables website. This week he posted a recipe that he snagged from my files on how to make a SINGLE chocolate chip cookie. This post is part of a contest for making pocket-sized things. At this point, my son’s [...]

Special Easter recipes anyone?

As Laura and I have been discussing Easter this year, we’ve both realized that we don’t really have many “dedicated” Easter recipes. Over the years, we’ve each done a variety of Easter meals. Unlike Thanksgiving or even Christmas, not a lot of recipes really come to mind as being the quintessential Easter foods.
So do YOU [...]

Totally off-topic: Year End Giving

I realize that this is totally off-topic, but it’s pressing on MY mind and I thought it might be a pressing issue for others. On December 31, it’s often a bit of a scramble to figure out last minute year-end charitable giving. Giving before the old year runs out has never been easier because now [...]

Christmas on Purpose

We were doing the Sunday morning “meet and greet” during the first few minutes of the service. Conversation swirled around me; “Good morning! Ready for Christmas?” “Got all your presents wrapped?” “All done with your baking?” I’d half-listen to the answers and then smile and turn to the next person and ask the same questions.
I [...]

Funny kid

We spent Thanksgiving with my husband’s family in the Chicago area. We out-of-towners stayed at a hotel around the corner from my sister-in-law’s house.
Yesterday morning, we lounged around the hotel until mid-morning, fending off the plaintive “What about breakfast?” questions as long as we could. We finally made it over to my sister-in-law’s house [...]

Happy Thanksgiving!

Barb and I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a very Happy Thanksgiving! In the midst of all of your cooking (and judging by the stats we’re looking at, some of you just realized that you need to do something about that turkey ) take time to reflect on the blessings [...]

Can we count pumpkin pie as a vegetable?

Why yes, I think we can. And we all know that vegetables are good for us.
This morning, I caught my smallest son redhanded in the kitchen, eating pumpkin pie for breakfast. He immediately assured me that this is Thanksgiving WEEK…thus making a pumpkin pie breakfast perfectly appropriate.
