California Girl does Carolina Barbecue

One of things that we’ve learned since we moved to the southeast is that people in the Carolinas take barbecue VERY seriously. In fact, barbecue is not a verb. One doesn’t “barbecue” meat. It’s practically a proper noun, as in, “Mildred is bringing Barbecue to the potluck so the line will start forming the day [...]

Roasted Vegetables ala Paul

Reposting some Easter recipes from last year. I wrote these up AFTER the fact of Easter last year, so now they are just in time for 2008:
Like I mentioned before, my brother-in-law, Paul, is an amazing cook. He managed most of the lavish Easter dinner single-handedly. I’ve had his roasted potatoes before, but this time, [...]

Some Easter dinner menu suggestions

Reposting this from last year:
I must confess: I am not cooking Easter dinner this year. In fact, I have nothing to do with Easter dinner this year. We’ll be eating Easter dinner with my sister-in-law Clair and her husband Paul. Both of them of wonderful cooks, so I suspect that I’ll be in for a [...]

Special Easter recipes anyone?

As Laura and I have been discussing Easter this year, we’ve both realized that we don’t really have many “dedicated” Easter recipes. Over the years, we’ve each done a variety of Easter meals. Unlike Thanksgiving or even Christmas, not a lot of recipes really come to mind as being the quintessential Easter foods.
So do YOU [...]

Swedish Rye Bread

This delightful bread is part of the Christmas Eve noon meal tradition in Swedish homes of Doppa Gryta (Dip in the Kettle).  I’ll post the Doppa Gryta recipe later, but it involves cooking several kinds of meat in a large kettle, then serving the meat, and putting the kettle with the broth in the middle [...]

Norwegian Meatballs

Here’s another great recipe from the family cookbook of my friend Jeri–it originates with her Great Grandfather Fyhrie. I’m told that Norwegian meatballs is not an uncommon traditional dish for Christmas Eve, but it’s also served throughout the year, and is well-loved.

New Year’s Eve in My Sister’s Kitchen

I was just getting ready to write that New Year’s Eve was less traditional at our house, but I realized that our Christmas and even Thanksgiving menus have varied at least to some degree each year (Christmas more than Thanksgiving), but New Year’s Eve has been nearly the same every year since I’ve been married. [...]
