You know how there are some tastes from childhood that just can’t be duplicated? Well, I’ve been enjoying some of the favorites of my youth while I’ve been visiting family in Phoenix, Arizona. If you’re ever in town, these are some good bets.
First, Rosati’s Pizza. Oh. My. Gosh. This pizza is just delicious. Back when we were poor newlyweds, Dave and I used to order Rosati’s pizza. One piece of this massive pizza was plenty. Two pieces left us stuffed. That means there were always leftovers. The pizza hasn’t changed in twenty years. Rosatis Pizza.
The second treat was some delicious Mexican food. Different parts of Mexico have different foods and flavors. I grew up eating Mexican food that originated mostly from the state of Sonora. Ironically, our favorite, chimichangas are reputed to be a US invention. Last night we ate at Macayo’s Mexican Kitchen. Macayo’s claims that in the 1950’s, the owner, Woody Johnson invented chimichangas. I’m not sure how true this story is because there is another place in Tucson that supposedly claims the same things. The salsa was fresh and yummy and the chimichanga hot and flavorable. The margaritas were also delicious and enormous.

Mmm, ditto on the Rosetti’s pizza. We’ve got a couple of franchises in the Kansas City area now, and they are amazing pizza. In fact it’s pretty much the only place to get that authentic super-soft crusty deep-dish style around here.

Barb, We are coming to the end of our month here in Phoenix, and I talked Uncle Gene into Macayo’s for lunch today. We had already been to Garcia’s where he had ‘the best burrito he’s every had in his life’, but today we each had a shredded beef Chimicanga and we had to agree that it was a ’stand out’ meal. That will definitely be on our list for next time. We are having such a good time here in this RV park close to your folks that Gene is talking about staying two months next year. He might even learn to like Mexican food better than Chinese with a little guidance from you and Laura to the best places.
Love, Aunt Joan
